ROWBUST IS BAILLIEU'S SECRET WEAPON AT HEAD OF THE YARRA 2010

  Richmond Rowers

The Rowbust 2010 Head of the Yarra was held yesterday on a steamy, wet election day with almost 200 crews competing.  Looking to unseat the Government, Hawthorn Member Ted Baillieu visited the event hours before learning if he would become Victoria's next Premier.

Emphasising its place as Australia's Premier regatta, crews from junior through to masters braved some surging Yarra conditions and the occasional bit of debris to purposefully compete.  Despite the inclement weather, all rowers enjoyed the racing - times across the board were generally slower than 2009 but in line with weather-adjusted expectations.

In a similar manner to 2009, Scotch and MUBC were again dominant across a range of events, taking on crews from most corners of the country.

Hawthorn Rowing Club's organisation of the event was flawless and the club's many delegates did a superb job pulling it together.  Chairperson of the event Malcolm Coe, again worked the many aspects of this large event flawlessly, with his usual cool demeanour. Retired AFL and Tennis commentator (and rower of some repute !) Peter Landy hosted the day with his smooth and insightful commentary.

Mr Baillieu spent some time on election day with the HOTY crowd and presented the Mens Open trophy to the MUBC crew.  A former Melbourne Grammar rower, Mr Baillieu commented that this was the biggest event in his electorate.
